The history of the Port Perry Angels Softball Club

The purpose of the Angels is to provide a competitive level of ball, play with quality players, be committed to an organization and enjoy travelling to other communities and represent the Angels to the highest level.

The Angels were formed in 1991 by Don Hurst. In 2000, the Angel's organization remembered Donnie by planting a tree and placing a plaque in his memory in centerfield at Palmer Park North.
In 1992 Donnie asked Rick Finlay to become president of the Angels and has built the organization from one Intermediate Women's team to as many as five teams.
Rick is coaching in his 28th year of girl's ball, having coached 17 years in Pickering.
In those 28 years Rick coached his Pickering team to two Midget National Gold and one Junior National Gold, plus one Senior National Gold.  Winning Senior Gold in 1991, his team was selected to represent Canada at the World Invitationals in Bejing, China.
The team was head to head with every country.

Besides coaching club teams, Rick has coached Ontario to the 1989 and 1993 Gold Medal at the Canada Summer Games and to Silver at the 1997 Canada Games.  Rick was again selected to coach the 2001 team, bringing home Gold and entering the history books as the first host team to win Gold since softball was incorporated into the Canada Summer Games in 1985.

As if coaching all summer is not enough, Coach Finlay just complete his 18 year as Head Coach of the Women's Softball team at Seneca College and this past fall his team won Bronze at the OCCA in 2001 and finished 4th in 2002.
Rick has enjoyed success in Port Perry, guiding his Intermediate team in 1994 and 1995 to the Eastern Canadian titles. His 2002 Senior Women's Team finished with a Gold at the Ontario Provincials and 2nd at the Canadian Nationals in PEI.

His 2002 Midget team won many tournaments including undefeated in League play and taking Gold at the North York Women's Championship.  It seems his 2003 team is off to a good start...in a pre-warm-up to the Rising Star Fall Showcase Tournament his Midget team won Gold at the Whitby Eagles Fall Tournament.

Every Organization enjoys success when good coaches and organizers are in place.

Rick has been very fortunate to work with a great group over the years and thanks every one of them.
